Ski Shack Co-Hosts Outdoor Wellness Event with YMCA

“Rejuvenation by the River” gathers community to connect near the Lackawanna River with a free Wellness event at Sweeney's Beach on Saturday, June 24, 2023.

Scranton, Pennsylvania  – As summer arrives here in Northeast PA, Ski Shack owner-operator Melissa Roberts partnered with the greater Scranton YMCA to to co-host “Rejuvenation by the River” on Saturday, June 24.

As part of the Y ’s Wellbeing Initiative, the free community event took place at Sweeney’s Beach on Poplar Street in Scranton from 2-5pm and featured a guided hike, yoga, reiki, wellness workshop and coffee/treats for purchase from locally owned The Art of the Bean Coffee Roasting Co.

“This event is really about bringing people together to build connections in nature,” Roberts said, adding that outdoor activities are a great vehicle for the Wellbeing Initiative’s mission to support individuals’ overall wellbeing with mental- and emotional-health centered programming. “There’s extensive scientific research that tells us that spending time outside, moving our bodies, and connecting with other people and with nature is good for our mental and overall physical health,” Roberts said.

Roberts, a certified holistic nutritionist, has made it her professional mission to share passion for nature and facilitate unforgettable outdoor experiences for people of all ages, abilities and income levels. In addition to operating Ski Shack’s 4-season outdoor gear retail and service operation, she organizes regular guided hikes, gear demos, educational workshops, paddle boarding classes and Onewheel group rides throughout NEPA. The goal? To help locals connect with each other and with the area’s abundant natural resources.

Saturday’s event is just the latest of Ski Shack’s ongoing work to strengthen and develop the region’s outdoor community, bringing awareness to local conservation efforts, and support area nonprofits. Roberts is working with the Y on additional outdoor programming for later this year, and in August, she’ll co-host the community-focused Wild Women NEPA Festival in Tunkhannock along with Dunmore holistic practitioner Kailin Bouse.
